Visiting Other Churches

During our three-month sabbatical, one of the biggest changes was going from leading a church every Sunday to walking into one as a visitor.

No responsibilities. No title. Just showing up to worship and observe.

We visited several churches across town. Some were lively and well-organized, with great systems for first-time guests. We were welcomed with hospitality tents, coffee coupons, visitor gifts, and follow-up messages during the week. Other churches were quieter and more traditional. At some churches, many people came up to meet us. At others, we didn’t meet anyone new.

I was reminded how many people in this city have a heart for God. I believe God is actively moving and drawing people closer to him in many different ways.

These visits also helped me reflect on our own church. I love the deep sense of family we share. I love that people care for one another, stick around after church to talk, do Bible studies, and genuinely enjoy being together. But I also see room for growth, especially when it comes to welcoming first-time guests.

Simple things like a welcome guide or a small gift can go a long way in making people feel seen and valued. It's not about copying what others do, but about growing in how we reflect the love of Christ to newcomers.

At times during this sabbatical, I found myself comparing what I saw to what we have. Some places had newer buildings, larger crowds, or more modern presentations. But what matters most is whether people are finding God and finding each other. And I believe that’s happening in our church.

I’m thankful for this time away and looking forward to returning in July!

John 13:35
"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
